Dear Jersey Shore Physicians,

I have been given the distinct privilege of joining the Jersey Shore University Medical Center family as the new Chief Operating Officer. This is a role that I am truly grateful for and excited about, and I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you personally to share my thoughts on the new journey we will embark upon together.

Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA begins his role as COO at Jersey Shore on March 4, 2019.

First, let me tell you a bit about my background. At age 10, a family health emergency with my father had a profound impact on my life. By the time I was in college, I knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. This connection to purpose led me to a career in health care, where I’ve been working for 35 years. I’ve overseen the full continuum of health care, from outpatient services, Emergency Department, inpatient services and critical care, to long term care, assisted living, adult day care and home health care. I believe this working knowledge of the entire spectrum of care will be beneficial to my leadership at Jersey Shore and our role within the Hackensack Meridian Health network.

One of the main reasons I chose to join Jersey Shore is because my roots are in large academic medical centers. Jersey Shore is a highly academic teaching environment with robust areas of specialization. There’s an excitement and energy that comes from being in a trauma center and active learning environment, as well as having an incredible children’s hospital. The hospital also serves a very diverse patient population, which keeps us on our toes and constantly adapting to the changing needs of those we serve.

Having a mutually trusting relationship between our physicians, leaders and team members is critical as we care for the community together. I am eager to hear your thoughts on what is working well and what ideas you have for improvement, growth and advancement at Jersey Shore. I am also excited to partner with our academic chairs to build upon the tremendous momentum and growth of residency and fellowship programs, and embrace the enthusiasm to invest in the next generation of doctors.

One of the things you will learn about me is that I truly believe in the power of “Service with a smile.” If we show dignity and respect to each other as colleagues, then it will carry over and have an impact on the patients and families we serve. I also want you to know that physicians and team members have a direct voice to administration. You’ll see me rounding at all times of day — including evenings, nights and weekends – to get to know our doctors and team personally.

During my first 90 days, I have three main goals. First, I plan to stop-listen-learn, which means partnering with physicians and team members to ensure the highest quality care. Second, I will create opportunities to celebrate and recognize the great work the team does every day. Third, we’ll look to move the dial for Great Place To Work (GPTW), with all departments identifying opportunities to address the patient experience and improve patient throughput efficiencies.

There are so many great things happening at our medical center, and I can’t wait to work with the team members, physicians, and supporters to build upon the momentum and achieve many more accomplishments in the future. I truly look forward to getting to know you, and thank you for your personal commitment and contributions to make Jersey Shore the hospital of choice for our community.
