Valdis Mangulis Lelkes, M.D., recently joined the Hackensack Meridian Health Orthopedic Oncology Program providing specialized expertise for treatment of bone and soft-tissue tumors at Hackensack University Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Valdis Mangulis Lelkes, M.D. is a board eligible orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic oncology. Having been born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Lelkes is excited to return and treat the community which he grew up in.

Prior Experience

Prior to his arrival at Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Lelkes completed the musculoskeletal oncology fellowship at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah Health. Dr. Lelkes is committed to utilizing the most current evidence-based medicine to improve the lives of his patients, which is supported by access to the latest technologies and comprehensive resources through the state’s most comprehensive health network at Hackensack Meridian Health.

Orthopedic Oncology at HMH

Dr. Lelkes works in partnership with Francis Patterson, M.D., who is the chief of Orthopedic Oncology at Hackensack Meridian Health and is one of the region’s leading experts in the field of orthopedic oncology. Dr. Lelkes also works alongside the sarcoma care team at John Theurer Cancer Center, which includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, social workers, palliative medicine specialists, physical therapists, and others with a shared focus on improving the lives of people with sarcoma. Together they collaborate to customize a plan of care designed to meet every patient’s personal needs.

Services offered

Dr. Lelkes treats both adult and pediatric patients, and offers expertise for the following conditions and procedures:

  • Tumors of the musculoskeletal system (benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumors in pediatric and adult patients)
  • Treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors of the trunk and chest wall
  • Metastatic bone disease
  • Allograft and endoprosthetic reconstructions
  • Custom implants and limb salvage surgery
  • Complex limb salvage procedures after failed joint reconstruction surgeries or trauma
  • Rotationplast
