Inaugural Health Quality Research Conference Draws Hundreds

Hundreds attended Hackensack Meridian Health’s (HMH) inaugural Health Quality Research Conference presented by the Institute for Quality Science on May 16 at the Marigold in Somerset. HMH clinicians submitted more than 60 abstracts on a variety of topics, including stroke, decreasing the prescriptions of unnecessary antibiotics and lowering the number of interruptions for providers during transfer of care. A panel of judges selected the following six abstracts to be presented during the meeting:

  • Minimizing Transition of Care Interruptions. Gladys Rojas, M.D., PGY2 and Srividya Naganathan, MD.
  • Quantified Blood Loss: A New Accurate and Reliable Method for Early Detection of Postpartum Hemorrhage. Andrew Rubenstein, M.D., Claudia Douglas, DNP, RN, APN-C, and Sharon Sledge, MA, MS, RN.
  • Nurse-Led Initiative to Decrease DSWI in CABG Patients. Alyssa Gonzalez, BSN, RN, PCCN and Christina Sanchez, BSN, RN. 
  • The C.A.S.T. Program: A Novel Approach to Improve Cultural and Communication Awareness Using Student Theater. Paul Schwartzberg, D.O., MBA, Srividya Naganathan, M.D., Carmela Rocchetti, MD, and Yen-Hong Kuo, PhD.

The three poster winners were:

  • A Data Analytics Approach to Improving the Quality of Rare Disease Discovery by Kenneth Lieberman, M.D.
  • Reducing 30-day Readmissions Due to Dehydration After Bariatric Surgery at a High Volume Center:  An Opportunity for Improvement by Erica Amianda, PA-C, Donna Swartz, RN, CPPS and Hans J. Schmidt, M.D.
  • Partnering with Patients and Families to Coproduce Better Care and Outcomes by Yukiko Kimura, M.D., Doreen Tabussi, MSN, APN, CPN and Vincent Del Gaizo, BS

Keynote Address

Keynote speaker Dr. Victor M. Montori from the Mayo Clinic answers questions from HMH clinicians.

The Mayo Clinic’s Victor M. Montori, M.D., author of Why We Revolt – Patient Revolution for Careful and Kind Care, gave the keynote address. Dr. Montori is a practicing endocrinologist, researcher, and author and a recognized expert in evidence-based medicine and shared decision-making. He developed the concept of minimally disruptive medicine and works to advance person-centered care for patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

After the keynote address and oral presentations, attendees participated in four workshops all of which focused on how HMH can use scientific rigor to elevate its quality of care.

Future Quality Events

Plans are already in the works for the next Health Quality Research Conference which will be held in the spring of 2020.
