Martin Gizzi, M.D., is Hackensack's new Director for the Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases. Dr. Gizzi will lead the Comprehensive Stroke Center.
In his new role, Dr. Gizzi plans on reorganizing Hackensack's stroke program with the creation of a dedicated inpatient neurology stroke service, creating a tele-stroke program and leading Hackensack to certification by the Joint Commission as a comprehensive stroke center.
Dr. Gizzi's Previous Experience
Prior to joining Hackensack, Dr. Gizzi was the director of Neurology for the Legacy Health System in Portland, Oregon. He also previously served as the chair of the Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center and was professor and chair of Neuroscience at Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences.
Dr. Gizzi holds an M.D. from the University of Miami and a PhD in neurophysiology from New York University. Dr. Gizzi was trained in neurology and neuro-ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He is board-certified in neurology with subspecialty certification in vascular neurology.
Dr. Gizzi served as the chair of the New Jersey Department of Health’s Stroke Advisory Panel for 11 years. He is a past chair of the NorthEast Cerebrovascular Consortium, a regional section of the American Heart Association. He currently sits on the Technical Advisory Panels for Comprehensive Stroke Certification and Acute Stroke Ready Certification at the Joint Commission.

Dr. Gizzi has published numerous scientific articles in the fields of vision, eye movements, balance disorders and stroke. Dr. Gizzi’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, NASA and private foundations.
