What You Need To Know
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is proud to announce the expansion of our advanced prostate cancer treatment portfolio with the Focal One® robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) system. This state-of-the-art, non-invasive technology provides a powerful new option for your patients with localized prostate cancer, reinforcing our commitment to delivering precise, patient-centric care. For patients seeking to avoid or delay radical therapy, HIFU offers an effective, radiation-free ablative treatment that prioritizes both oncologic control and the preservation of quality of life.
The Focal One® HIFU system represents a significant advancement in focal therapy. By fusing pre-operative MRI data with real-time ultrasound, our expert urologists can robotically target and ablate cancerous lesions with sub-millimeter precision. This focused thermal energy destroys the tumor while meticulously sparing surrounding healthy tissue, including the urinary sphincter and neurovascular bundles.
Key Benefits for Your Patients:
- Reduced Risk of Side Effects: Significantly lowers the risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction commonly associated with radical prostatectomy and radiation.
- Non-Invasive, Outpatient Procedure: A single-session treatment with no incisions, no radiation exposure, and a rapid return to daily activities.
- Exceptional Precision: Robotic targeting ensures energy is delivered exclusively to the cancerous tissue, minimizing collateral damage.
- Preservation of Future Options: HIFU treatment does not preclude future definitive therapies, such as surgery or radiation, should they become necessary.
Ideal Candidates for HIFU Therapy:
This therapy is an excellent option for appropriately selected patients, including those with:
- Clinically localized prostate cancer (T1c-T2b)
- Gleason Grade Group 1 (3+3) or Grade Group 2 (3+4)
- A distinct lesion visible on mpMRI
- A desire to avoid the side effects of radical treatment or those on active surveillance with evidence of progression.
