What You Need To Know
JFK University Medical Center is now offering Pressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC), a cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). This innovative approach provides a new option for your patients, particularly those who may not be candidates for traditional cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC.
What is PIPAC?
PIPAC delivers aerosolized chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity via laparoscopy. This targeted approach allows for higher drug concentrations within the peritoneum while minimizing systemic exposure and side effects. The procedure takes approximately 90 minutes and patients typically go home the same day.
Advantages of PIPAC:
- Minimally Invasive: Small incisions, reduced recovery time compared to CRS/HIPEC.
- Targeted Therapy: Delivers high concentrations of chemotherapy directly to the affected area.
- Reduced Systemic Toxicity: Minimizes side effects compared to systemic chemotherapy.
- Versatile Application: Can be used as a bridge to CRS/HIPEC, adjuvant therapy, or for palliative care.
- Improved Quality of Life: Offers symptom relief and improved quality of life for patients with PC.
- Uninterrupted Chemotherapy: Patients can receive PIPAC alongside their regular chemotherapy treatments without any disruption.
Ideal Candidates for Referral:
- Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of any origin, both primary (i.e. mesothelioma) or secondary (i.e. appendiceal, colorectal, ovarina, pancreatic, etc...)
- Patients who are not candidates for or have declined CRS/HIPEC.
- Patients with symptomatic ascites.
- Patients who have progressed on systemic chemotherapy.
- Patient seeking both therapeutic and palliative care options
