What You Need To Know
The future of live tumor care is on the horizon.
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is excited to announce that we will soon be among the first in the region to offer Histotripsy, a revolutionary, non-invasive therapy that uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy liver tumors without incisions, needles, heat or even radiation.
This groundbreaking technology represents a new frontier in cancer care, offering a powerful new option for your patients. Patients with primary or metastatic tumors to the liver, as well as benign liver masses, are all potentially eligible.
What is Histotripsy?
This technology uses a process called acoustic cavitation to generate a controlled "bubble cloud" that precisely and safely fractionates "liquefies" tumor cells. This purely mechanical approach offers significant advantages:
- Truly Non-Invasive: Mitigates the risks of bleeding, infection, and other complications associated with percutaneous or surgical procedures.
- Improved Safety: Effectively treats tumors in challenging locations near major structures like blood vessels and bile ducts where thermal ablation is often limited.
- No Ionizing Radiation: Preserves healthy liver tissue and maintains future treatment pathways for the patient.
- A New Option for High-Risk Patients: Expands treatment possibilities for patients who are not candidates for surgery or thermal ablation or those that seek to avoid invasive procedures.
- Outpatient Intervention: Patients generally go home the same day of the procedure with no incisions.
