What You Need To Know

  • Riverview Medical Center’s Women’s Center is the only hospital in the HMH network to offer CEM and CEM-directed biopsies.
  • Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) combines high-resolution digital 3D mammography with the functional imaging of contrast.
  • The exam takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, with the only risk being an allergic reaction to the contrast, which has a reported incidence of 0.2-0.4%.

Helps Improve Breast Cancer Detection

The new CEM technology will enhance breast cancer visualization, detection and accuracy for patients who:
  • Are unable to undergo MRI due to insurance issues, obesity, implanted devices, or other concerns.
  • Are at increased risk for breast cancer due to dense breasts, family or personal history, and prior high-risk biopsy results.
  • Receive uncertain findings on conventional mammography and ultrasound.
  • Need further imaging assessment of clinical findings.
  • Have been diagnosed with breast cancer and need additional imaging to determine the extent of disease.
  • Are receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy and need an imaging follow-up to monitor response to treatment.
