Abstracts presented by Jersey Shore University Medical Center and JFK University Medical Center clinicians tied for 2nd place in the Transforming Cardiovascular Care category at the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) Scientific Sessions, April 2-4, 2022, in Washington, D.C.
JFK University Medical Center’s abstract presentation was titled Developing Heart Failure Nurse Champions: Effect on Nursing Care. It focused on the development of heart failure nurse champions (HFNCs) to address the fluid status of heart failure patients.
Jersey Shore University Medical Center's abstract presentation was titled Early Invasive Strategy in Patients with High-Risk Non-ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Delays, Barriers, and Impacts at a Tertiary Medical Center.
About Developing Heart Failure Nurse Champions: Effect on Nursing Care
Nursing evaluation of daily weight and intake/output is problematic especially during the COVID pandemic, but remains an important part of the care of a heart failure patient. Jodelle V. Gold, MSN, APN, ACNP-BC, CHFN, AACC, mentored the HFNCs in the creation and implementation of a performance initiative using the electronic health record, building reports, providing data sharing, and real time front-line feedback. They saw compliance on the telemetry floors improve with ranges from 80-100 percent (from a baseline mean of 22 percent). Overall hospital compliance improved and while improvement plateaued as fallouts were noted on non-tele/non-HF, nurse champion floors, particularly during the second-wave, compliance was better than 2020 data overall. The hope is that continued development of such programs, mirrored after existing certification or leadership programs, might provide insight to help front-line nurses improve clinical care, develop professionally, raise morale and job satisfaction in an ever-changing care environment.

About Early Invasive Strategy in Patients with High-Risk Non-ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Delays, Barriers, and Impacts at a Tertiary Medical Center
The abstract focused on leveraging HMH’s electronic medical record system to automate patient risk scoring to provide clinicians with a rapid tool to aid in the triage of patients presenting with an NSTEMI (difficult to identify heart attack). Jennifer Heck-Kanellidis, DNP, MSN, ACNP, MSN, HNP, BSN, R.N., live streamed the presentation in person with the other co-authors joining virtually.
