Specialty Update Obstructive Sleep Apnea Services at HUMC and JSUMC

Published:
November 27, 2018

What you need to know

The Institute for Sleep Wake Disorders at HUMC has a new program for admitted patients with suspected and undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) therapy is now available at HUMC and JSUMC for patients with OSA who are unable to use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

More details on the OSA program at HUMC

  • An APN navigator performs STOP BANG screening on patients who have potential risk for OSA. Patients who screen positive will undergo a comprehensive evaluation.
  • The APN then collaborates with the primary doctor regarding his/her preference for follow-up and/or outpatient sleep testing, if warranted.

Program Goals

  • Identify patients and facilitate treatment though an integrative and collaborative approach
  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Improve symptoms
  • Prevent illness
  • Reduce hospital readmission rates

More details about UAS

UAS is the first implantable device for treating OSA. It includes a small generator, sensing lead and a stimulation lead. When activated by a handheld remote, the device sends mild stimulation to key airway muscles, keeping the airway open during sleep. In the Stimulation Therapy for Apnea Reduction (STAR) trial, published in the January 9, 2014, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, patients experienced a significant reduction in sleep apnea incidents and substantial improvement in quality of life.
