Adeel A. Butt, MD, MS, FACP, FIDSA has been appointed as Regional Chair of the Department of Medicine for the Central Region. Additionally, he will serve as the Internal Medicine Chair at JFKUMC.
Dr. Butt joins us from Weill Cornell Medical College, where he served as Professor of Medicine and Professor of Population Health Sciences for more than a decade, as well as from Hamad Medical Corporation, where he held several senior leadership roles. He is a highly accomplished clinician, scholar, and educator, and is recognized as a global leader in the field of medicine. Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Butt has served in numerous leadership positions in the United States and internationally, including Clinical Director, Residency Program Director, Division Chief, Department Chair, Institute Director, and Chief Quality Officer across major healthcare systems. Dr. Butt is Board Certified in Infectious Diseases and holds advanced degrees in clinical and health services research.
Consistently ranked among the top 2% of the world’s most influential scientists in the peer-reviewed Stanford List, Dr. Butt has also received numerous national and international honors, including a Fulbright Scholarship, the Yale–Johnson & Johnson Award in International Health, a National Talent Pool Scholars Award, the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s Training Faculty Award to Africa, and multiple Excellence in Research Awards across the US, UAE, Qatar, and Pakistan. He has lectured widely as a visiting professor and invited speaker, and has provided consultation to governmental and non-governmental organizations on building research, educational, and training capacity in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Butt has authored or co-authored more than 300 papers in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Clinical Infectious Diseases, among others. With continuous extramural funding over the last 23 years, Dr. Butt is globally recognized as a leader in clinical and translational research and clinical trials, and creation and analyses of large national databases for comparative effectiveness and real-world clinical studies.
His proven leadership in academic medicine and complex health systems makes him an outstanding choice to lead our Department of Medicine. Congratulations to Dr. Butt!
