James Sherer, M.D., Appointed Interim Chief Medical Officer at Carrier Clinic

James Sherer, M.D has been appointed as Interim Chief Medical Officer at Carrier Clinic, effective August 8, 2025. Dr. Sherer brings a deep commitment to our mission and extensive experience in behavioral health leadership. 

Since joining Carrier as Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sherer has played an instrumental role in advancing clinical excellence, supporting integrated care initiatives and championing the wellbeing of both our patients and our team members. His leadership during critical organizational transition has demonstrated not only clinical expertise but also a collaborative, values-driven approach that aligns deeply with our goals. 

Dr. Sherer is an addiction psychiatrist, educator, author and patient advocate. He is board certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, completed medical school and psychiatric residency training at Rutgers University Medical School, and completed an addiction psychiatry fellowship at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Sherer previously served as Director of the Addiction Medicine Consult Service and Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He also is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at our School of Medicine. He most recently served as Medical Director, Addiction Psychiatry, at Overlook Medical Center, and also owns a private, outpatient psychiatric practice.

As interim Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sherer will oversee all aspects of clinical care delivery, support quality improvement efforts and continue to work closely with our leadership team to ensure continuity of care and strategic alignment across programs.
