Dr. Gary Small, Chair of Psychiatry at Hackensack University and Behavioral Health Physician-in-Chief at HMH, received the Honorary Doctor of Medicine degree from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan.
NCKU recognized Dr. Small's research in Alzheimer's disease and healthy aging.
After receiving the degree, Dr. Small gave a lecture on Detection and Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease to faculty, trainees, students, donors and the public. The next day, he gave a special lecture to the Taiwan Dementia Society on Alzheimer's Disease Targets: Amylod, Inflammation or Both. The audience consisted mostly of physicians, medical leadership int he field, and others. Dr. Small has conducted ground-breaking research on brain health and cognitive abilities and ways to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease symptoms. He has studied and developed lifestyle and memory training programs for improving cognition and healthy aging, which have been made available throughout the U.S. and aboard in senior centers, hospitals, and community sites. Dr. Small has authored over 500 scientific works and received numerous awards and honors, including the American Psychiatric Association’s Weinberg Award for Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry. Scientific American magazine named him one of the world’s top 50 innovators in science and technology. He is the author of 12 popular books, including The New York Times bestseller, The Memory Bible.
Dr. Small has delivered talks around the world and frequently is quoted in leading media outlets both here and abroad.
