Lauren Koniaris, M.D., regional chief medical informatics officer for the northern region recently participated in Columbia Business School’s Data Privacy in Healthcare panel. The event held on April 8 included representatives from the health care industry sharing and exploring data privacy in healthcare.
Dr. Koniaris shared her perspective on data privacy in health care and discussed how it is managed in a traditional health care system. In addition to Dr. Koniaris, there were representatives from the pharmacy and emerging health care industries – all giving their views on the current trend of data privacy in healthcare.
A dominant theme that emerged from the event was the need for more advanced laws in the United States to protect our patients’ privacy, similar to that that in Europe. The group also discussed the need for the evolution of HIPAA (Health Information and Portability and Accountability Act) in the current technology age.
