What You Need To Know
Beginning Monday, January 20, two new banners will be added to Epic’s microbiology results section to help clinicians identify two common mechanisms of beta-lactam resistance in gram-negative organisms: extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and Amp-C beta-lactamases. These banners will be triggered based on the pattern of beta-lactam resistance on phenotypic susceptibility testing and will be visible in a red rectangular box at the top of the ID and susceptibility report.
The two banners will read as follows:
- ESBL Banner: "This result indicates an ESBL infection."
- Amp-C Banner: "This result includes an organism that may contain an inducible beta-lactamase (Amp-C beta-lactamase). Consider avoiding use of third generation cephalosporins due to the risk of inducible resistance."
