Epic Action Alert Newborn Naming Convention Update

What You Need To Know

WHAT: Going forward, the naming convention for newborns will be updated in Epic. Infants born within the hospital will now have the mother's last name, first name and the gender of the newborn on their identification. This is a Joint Commission recommendation to prevent errors with newborns. WHEN: Beginning Monday, October 16 Details: 
  • Previously Labor & Delivery identification only included the mother’s last name and the newborn’s gender.
  • No workflows will change, but all registrars / Labor & Delivery staff and providers will see the newborn’s name using the new format: MomsLastName, MomsFirstName Boy or Girl
