CPOE Changes Coming to Southern Ocean

Updated:

The Epic go live marks an important change in CPOE policy at Southern Ocean Medical Center.

Starting September 30, 2019 written orders for inpatients will no longer be allowed.

Telephone orders are to be used sparingly when a provider is not physically present or is unable to log in to a computer to enter orders him/herself.

  • RNs will enter the order into Epic
  • Provider will be required to provide their Physician ID# to the RN
  • Provider must stay on the telephone while the order is entered and signed by the RN with a read back confirmation
  • All Verbal/Telephone orders must be countersigned within 72 hours

Providers should note that telephone orders for complex orders such as admissions can take 20-30 minutes. If the provider is near their computer, they should log in and enter orders directly. Team members and providers will learn more about this new process during Epic training.
