What You Need To Know

Please find below the NJDOH vector-borne surveillance report for week 36.

Report highlights:

  • New Jersey is reporting four new West Nile Virus (WNV) cases and two new presumptive viremic blood donors (PVD).  To date there have been six WNV human cases with additional reports under investigation and three PVDs.  No animal or avian cases of WNV have been reported.
  • Seventy-six additional mosquito pools tested positive for WNV since last week’s report, for a total of 945 positive mosquito pools in all 21 counties. Recent week’s virus detections are substantially higher than the five-year average.
  • The average number of Culex mosquitoes reported in the previous two weeks was highest in Union and Hudson counties. Culex mosquitoes are predominantly responsible for WNV transmission and are often found around the home, taking advantage of standing water sources (e.g., buckets, wheelbarrows, tarps).
  • One additional mosquito pool tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Camden County. To date, three mosquito pools have tested positive for EEE, three for Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), and two for La Crosse Encephalitis Virus (LAC). There have been no human or animal cases of EEE, JCV or LAC in 2025.
  • There have been two cases of Powassan virus (POWV) reported in Morris and Monmouth counties, including one death, and one case of malaria under investigation lacking relevant international travel history.
  • The number of anaplasmosis and babesiosis cases has exceeded 2024 totals. Tick-related emergency department visits continued to decline but are expected to increase in October when adult deer ticks are active.
