What You Need To Know
Please find below the NJDOH vector-borne surveillance report for week 34.
Report highlights:
- New Jersey is reporting one new human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in week 31 from Middlesex County. To date there have been two WNV human cases and one presumptive viremic blood donor (PVD). No animal cases of WNV have been reported to date.
- NJ is investigating a case of malaria in Morris County with no recent international travel. Mosquito surveillance is ongoing; no mosquitoes have tested positive for malaria parasites.
- One hundred forty-three additional mosquito pools tested positive for WNV since last week’s report, for a total of 776 positive mosquito pools in all 21 counties. Virus detections are substantially higher than the five-year average.
- The average number of Culex mosquitoes reported in the previous two weeks was highest in Cumberland County, followed by Hudson and Union counties. Culex mosquitoes are predominantly responsible for WNV transmission and are often found around the home, taking advantage of standing water sources (e.g., buckets, wheelbarrows, tarps).
- An additional mosquito pool was positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Atlantic County in week 34. To date, three mosquito pools have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), two have tested positive for EEE, and two have tested positive for La Crosse Encephalitis Virus (LAC). There have been no human or animal cases of EEE, JCV or LAC in 2025.
- There have been two cases of Powassan virus (POWV) reported in Morris and Monmouth counties.
