Please find below the NJDOH vector-borne surveillance report for week 24.

Report highlights:

  • Two mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) this week in Somerset and Union counties (additional tests pending). There has been a total of 8 WNV positive pools in 2024.
  • There have been no human or animal cases of WNV reported in New Jersey in 2024.
  • New Jersey is reporting one case of Powassan virus from week 19 in Sussex County. This is the first Powassan case in NJ since 2022, when 2 cases were reported in Sussex County.
  • The number of travel-associated dengue cases is considerably higher in 2024 (40 cases) compared to the same timeframe in 2023 (10 cases), associated with outbreaks in several Latin American countries.
  • The number of Lyme disease cases this week is slightly below the average number reported this week in the past two years.
  • In week 24, the number of tick-related ED visits was lower than the previous week and lower compared to this time last year and to the 5-year average. The highest number of visits was in the central east region.
