HMH has a new policy regarding Perioperative/Procedural Sharps Safety. The policy gives guidance to perioperative team members for identifying potential sharps hazards and developing and implementing best practices, including:

  • use of engineered sharps to prevent sharps injuries and reduce bloodborne pathogen exposure to perioperative patients and team members;
  • the use of a neutral zone or hands-free technique for passing and retrieving sharp instruments, blades, needles, and devices; and
  • Limiting use of sharp instruments to clinically necessity and only when no safer alternative is available.

You can access the new policy on PolicyStat by clicking here.
